Our Mission SDC's mission is to foster independence and improve the quality of life for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
SDC's Tradition of Excellence and Commitment - A Brief History
Services for the Developmentally Challenged Inc. was established in 1996 by families and professionals who were dedicated to providing quality service for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. SDC started with the provision of case management and family support services to individuals and families in the Bronx. The family support group provided monthly education and training meetings and became known as "We are Family," which continues to this day. In 2001, SDC opened its first residence in Riverdale for four individuals whose parents were aging and concerned about the future of their children. Our second residence opened one month later, which served four individuals who also lived with elderly parents and were in need of alternative living arrangements. In 2004, SDC opened its third residence, also located in Riverdale, for eight individuals who were on the New York State Cares waiting list. In 2012, SDC opened its first Day Habilitation program, Striving on Strength. We have since added Community Habilitation and two Respite programs: one is an evening respite program during the week for adults who live at home with their families and the other is Saturday Respite for children.
